I love your point here. One interesting finding from my research on antiracist White teachers and leaders is that exposure to diversity helps, but the difference is that antiracist White people understand that there are EQUALLY VIABLE WAYS OF LIVING, as opposed to culturally inferior ones that they have to help, improve, or save. In education we often talk about the savior mentality or the White rescue complex, where White folks who are exposed to people of color — be they in their families or other spheres — don’t always regard those people as equals. As human beings. Antiracist White people view people of color as having EQUALLY VIABLE, respectable ways of living and join us in solidarity. Not charity.
